PRecycling Webinar - "Enabling the circular toy economy: A PRecycling deep dive"

The PRecycling Project promotes circular economy principles by transforming post-consumer plastics from products such as household appliances and toys into high-quality recyclates suitable for new manufacturing. It combines advanced recycling technologies, digital traceability tools, and strict safety measures to ensure the production of safe, high-quality recycled materials.

Under this framework, on 5th November 2025, Circularise and EuPC hosted an online webinar that explored these challenges and showcased how the PRecycling project is pioneering solutions to enable a circular toy economy.

The toy industry is facing a transformative moment, as increasing consumer demand for sustainable products, coupled with upcoming regulations, is pushing companies to rethink how toys are designed, produced, and recycled. For this reason, the webinar brought together several experts from industry and research centres to provide insight into this relevant topic.

The webinar featured the participation of:

Moderator: Maria Alejandra Leon, Project Manager, Circularise

Experts:

  • Serena Gariboldi, Public Institutions Affairs Officer, Circularise

  • Luisa Marín, Head of Consumer Goods Services: Chemistry Department, AIJU

  • Ana Rita Neiva, Plastics Engineer at Coolrec, Renewi

  • Martin Schlummer, Business Field Manager Recycling, Fraunhofer

  • Bernhard von Vacano, Vice President Plastics Circularity Research, BASF

During the webinar, the panellists shared first-hand experiences and discussed the practical realities, strategic benefits, and next steps for enabling a circular toy economy. They actively engaged in discussions and provided thoughtful answers to questions from the audience.

During the webinar, attendees were invited to participate in the poll: “Do you use any digital tools to manage or verify your sustainability data?” The responses were as follows:

29% – Partially digital: some tools, but gaps remain

26% – Not yet started: no tools or tracking in place

24% – Early-stage piloting or evaluating solutions

12% – Manual: spreadsheets or offline methods only

10% – Fully digital: integrated, automated tools in use like DPP

The PRecycling webinar made it clear that by adopting Digital Product Passports and leveraging collaborative EU projects like PRecycling, toy companies and more can meet regulatory requirements, improve recycling efficiency, and build trust with consumers, all while taking meaningful steps toward a truly circular future.

There is still a lot to unpack in PRecycling, as the project enters its final phase, so stay tuned for more insights and results!
